Mentoring is the key to empowerment

Our mentee: Hasmik Aramyan, who is in the Mentoring Phase was introverted and shy, she didn’t like to communicate with others and kept herself away from the group. She felt shy to express her ideas in front of the group. Both her parents and teachers also saw this problem in Hasmik and wanted her to overcome it.

After attending 3-4 individual meetings at Nor Luyce, we could see changes in Hasmik. Now Hasmik can express her opinion and take part in group discussions, she volunteers to help the staff members during the group meetings. Also, her mentor says that even during the individual meetings Hasmik suggests different activities to make their individual meetings more interesting and fun.

During these three months, we could realize 127 individual mentoring meetings helping the adolescent girls reveal their skills, strengths, weaknesses, and taking steps to overcome the weaknesses with the help of their strengths.

Along with the individual mentoring meetings, the adolescent girls also took part in group meetings, titles as “Mutual help: I understand you”, “The fairy world of our emotions”, and “Women reproductive health”. The group meetings allowed the mentors and mentees to learn more about each other, reveal their fears and make a plan to help each other to overcome their fears and troublesome situations together.

Along with these meetings, the girls also had a chance to have fun and gain new knowledge through fun time and activities. Through an intellectual game, the girls revealed their knowledge, gained a new one and competed with their skills. The team who won the intellectual game received awards.

One of the mentors: Arpi Hambaryan, reports that this is the second time I am volunteering at Nor Luyce as a Mentor. The program allowed me to gain new friends, experience, knowledge, and opportunity to work in teams. Such kind of program is very important for the adolescents of Gyumri because they don't have an opportunity to have the safe space to express themselves, their challenges, fears, and hopes, to learn something new and gain knowledge. This program is the right place to move forward and gain successes. Besides, the girls find a good friend and a helping hand in this important phase of their life.
