2024 is a year for new opportunitites. Throughout South Africa, there are children in the early years desperate for the chance to have a good start on their educational journey. Statistics show we are way behind in literacy and numeracy.

So how do we plan to do this? Starting Chance recognises the passion and determination of the practitioners and teachers who want to help young children but are not sure how to do it. We provide practical solutions.

On the 10th of February 2024, Blooming Stars Early Childhood Center played host to a dynamic Training Teachers in Township (TTnT) session. Attended by 43 Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners, this training aimed to empower participants with the necessary skills to implement the Classroom and Learning Management (C.A.L.M) curriculum developed by Starting Chance. The C.A.L.M curriculum serves as a bridge between pedagogical theories learned at Further Education and Training (FET) colleges and the practical application of these theories in creating stimulating learning environments.

The TTnT session was specifically designed for ECD Centers at the initial stages of their journey with Starting Chance. To ensure a tailored learning experience, the Starting Chance Training Team divided the practitioners into different age groups. This division allowed for in-depth discussions and exploration of activities pertinent to the specific developmental needs of each age group.

The central theme of the training was the Space for Learning module under the C.A.L.M curriculum. This module emphasizes the importance of the physical classroom layout and how it contributes to effective learning environments for young children. The Starting Chance team provided insights into creating spaces that facilitate engagement, exploration, and holistic development.

Throughout the training, there was a strong emphasis on connecting the dots between learning spaces and key educational domains, including literacy, numeracy, and life skills. The Starting Chance team underscored the significance of identifying links that enhance a child's overall learning experience.

Consistent with Starting Chance's approach to training, the session prioritised experiential learning. Practitioners were given the opportunity to physically demonstrate their understanding of the classroom layout, ensuring a hands-on and immersive learning experience.

Engaging discussions took place during the training, touching on various aspects of early childhood education. Participants shared experiences, challenges, and innovative ideas, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

This TTnT session marked the beginning of a series, as the Starting Chance team announced their commitment to hosting a TTnT every month throughout the year. This ongoing support aims to provide continuous professional development for ECD practitioners and contribute to the growth and success of Starting Chance-affiliated centers.

The Training Teachers in Township session at Blooming Stars Early Childhood Center on February 10th, 2024, set a promising tone for the year ahead. With a focus on practical application, tailored learning experiences, and ongoing support, Starting Chance continues to make significant strides in capacitating ECD practitioners for success in their vital role of nurturing the next generation.

We are excited to see how the practitioners implement their learning in the classroom. Our experienced team will be visiting all the schools in our programme on a monthly basis to support this implementation.

With your help, we will be able to reach over 1800 children in 2024. Thank you for your support!
