Our counselors have now trained 130 peer counselors to work with girls who were rescued from the practice of child slavery known as Kamlari.
The counselors hold regular support groups to help the girls recover from the traumatic experiences as indentured servants in homes far from their families.
In addition to support groups, the peer counselors provide individual peer counseling, house and hostel visits and school visits. There are now 2,137 girls participating in these groups. The peer counselors also counseled nearly 1,000 former Kamlari in individual sessions last year.
NYF has rescued 12,702 girls from Kamlari since we launched the program 15 years ago. Nearly half of them are in school or attending vocational training.
The counseling program has also played a vital role in preventing early marriage among the freed Kamlari through awareness and radio programs, orientations, discussions and group counseling.
NYF’s counseling center in Kathmandu offers extensive training and technological support to the peer counseling staff.
Thank you for support of our counseling programs.
Namaste!
