To achieve "Zero Euthanasia" across Japan, Peace Wanko regularly takes in dogs scheduled to be euthanized at the request of local authorities. Most of the dogs we rescue are timid stray dogs. However, some have illnesses or injuries, are seniors, or have even been abandoned by their owners.
Carter, an estimated 17-year-old dog who lived in our Orange Kennel, was one of them.
Carter arrived at Peace Wanko when he was around 11 years old after being rescued from an animal care center. He appeared to have had an owner before, but had likely suffered abuse. Deeply distrustful of people, he wouldn't let anyone touch him at first. Even so, as our staff continued to stay by his side and give him time to adjust at his own pace, he gradually opened his heart and eventually let us gently stroke his back.
From the time he was first rescued, Carter walked while favoring his left leg. Over the years, his legs grew weaker with age, leaving him almost entirely bedridden this year. Because he also struggled with underlying conditions such as heart disease and hypothyroidism, he lived in our Orange Kennel under the devoted, tender care of our staff.
Carter’s favorite moment was mealtime. Eating softened food right out of the staff’s hands, he would happily finish every single bite each day and drink plenty of water! Even when he could no longer walk, his appetite never faded, and he would take a satisfied nap after eating.
Surrounded by warmth and love, Carter spent calm and peaceful days sunbathing with the help of the staff and being repositioned regularly to prevent bedsores. Then one evening, after finishing his dinner just like any other day, Carter lay down and passed away quietly, as if falling asleep. On July 30, 2026, he began his peaceful journey, passing away peacefully of old age.
Thanks to your warm support, Carter was able to spend his second chance at life peacefully at Peace Wanko for about six years. Yet, many dogs just like Carter still require daily, intensive care today.
Our mission does not end simply with rescuing dogs scheduled to be euthanized. It also means providing them with the necessary medical treatment, everyday care, and socialization training so they can find new forever homes. And for dogs like Carter—who are unlikely to find an adoptive family due to advanced age or chronic illnesses—our staff become their family, staying by their side until the very end to ensure they live a happy life. This, too, is our vital responsibility.
Peace Wanko’s activities are made possible entirely by your generous donations. We truly appreciate your continued warmth and support.
