At the beginning of August, after two weeks of training, the young people started delivering the project in our four partner schools and we already have some amazing numbers to report: last month they delivered 148 sessions to 1,948 children of whom 985 were girls and 963 were boys, almost all of whom received one Reading Mediation session and one Story-telling session.
As Marinisa, the general manager, says "The online monitoring system is very easy to use and gives us precise data covering the number of children attended in each school, their gender and which class and school they are from. The schools have been very receptive from the moment we tell them that we are back with the project and we have been receiving requests from far away schools that have never had the project, to go and work with them."
At the centre of the project are the young people who deliver the sessions to the children and 16 year old Juliana wanted to share this with us all: "I feel that my communication has improved a lot and also how I speak to people because I have never worked with children before. So I think I have greatly improved with this and being able to communicate with them gives me a really good feeling; I am very proud of my development. There was an activity using our books and a boy started talking to us and gave me a drawing of Sponge Bob and I kept it and it's now at home. When we arrive at the schools, the children are really enthusiastic and it is evident when we go into a classroom and the children all shout - 'look its the people from ACER'. This is really cool because although most know the project and know that we will be going, and the activities are the same, it is our interaction and dynamism which gives more life to the story that is being told... and gives them the opportunity to be a part of it, so I think it is a really positive experience for them and they are very happy with this."
This has been a very encouraging start and we look forward to being able to report more later in the school year.
