Rainwater harvesting supports communities

By Fiji team | Fiji project team

Our initiative is geared towards addressing critical water security challenges in the Dawasamu District, aligning with the global agenda outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 6  – Clean Water and Sanitation.

A cornerstone of our strategy is the implementation of rainwater harvesting, a practice that offers multifaceted benefits for communities in the long term. The process of collecting and storing rainwater during the wet season serves as a proactive measure, guaranteeing a consistent water supply during dry spells. This strategic approach significantly reduces the vulnerability of communities to water shortages, and concurrently promotes essential hygiene practices like handwashing.

Ensuring local ownership of rainwater harvesting projects is paramount to their success. Our methodology commences with a thorough assessment of the unique needs in each village. Collaborating closely with the community, we conduct a comparative analysis of the population against existing water storage capacity. This information forms the basis for calculating and addressing capacity deficits. Simultaneously, we evaluate the state of current infrastructure to pinpoint areas requiring repairs, subsequently offering support for the installation of rainwater harvesting systems.

An integral component of our program involves empowering the community with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively utilize and maintain harvesting systems. To facilitate this, we have developed educational materials distributed among community members following the installation of rainwater tanks. These materials underscore the imperative for ongoing maintenance, emphasizing that well-preserved systems equate to a sustainable and safe water supply benefiting the entire community. The educational materials are designed to convey essential information in an easily understandable format, enabling community members to educate their peers.

Recognizing water as a precious resource, the practice of harvesting rainwater stands as a transformative benefit for communities. Your invaluable support plays a pivotal role in enhancing water accessibility for many. We take pride in reporting the successful increase of overall water storage capacity in numerous villages across various districts in Fiji, including the Island of Moturiki.

We extend our heartfelt thanks for your continuous support, knowing that your contributions directly contribute to the installation of more rainwater tanks and the ongoing maintenance of existing systems. We eagerly anticipate updating you on the strides we make in this endeavor and the positive impact realized through your generous support.
