What a privilege to report back on Khanyisa, the growing albino snare survivor in our care.
Our last update was about Khanyisa who is learning to share now that there is a new baby in her family.
Khanyisa continues to happily drink all her milk bottles, as we wean her slowly off them entirely. She will be turning five in September this year - based on an age estimate by our experts, and so will soon be able to rely on vegetation purely for her dietary needs, like the rest of the elephants in the herd. She is thriving, which is such a delight to see, as we know the hard road it took to get her to this stable and strong condition. So much goes into the care of baby elephant orphans, and raising them through the difficult early years, but Khanyisa inspires us and reminds us that all the hard work, late nights, and stressful mornings are worth it.
Khanyisa’s allomother Kumbura has been lavishing all her attention on the newest baby in the herd, Phabeni. This does mean that she tends less to Khanyisa and has somewhat signalled to the albino four-year-old that she helped raise that the newest calf in the family now needs her more. Khanyisa is happy and doing well though. She is comfortable in her own skin and is happy to be with the other youngsters or simply by herself. Timisa spends most of her time with Pisa, Zindoga and Mambo and Khanyisa will also often be with these younger elephants, or she will spend time with Phabeni, if not on her own.
