As Khanyisa turned five during September this year, we celebrated this milestone as a way of honouring her growth and transformation over the years. She has come so far from those early days in the nursery, where she would snuggle into her zebra blanket next to Lammie, her sheep companion. Today, she is learning from her herd and enjoying the simple pleasures of being an elephant.
Khanyisa’s journey began when she was found trapped in a poacher’s snare, weak and traumatized. Rescued by HERD, she received loving care from her allomothers, Bubi, Kumbura and Tokwe and adoptive mom Lundi, which helped her heal. Khanyisa made friends and embraced her playful, curious nature as she grew more assertive. Now, she’s a happy, healthy young elephant radiating joy.

Khanyisa’s Story
Khanyisa, a rare albino calf, was discovered in January 2020, trapped and injured after struggling for days to escape a poacher’s snare. She arrived at HERD with deep cuts on her neck and cheeks and missing a piece of her ear. Alone and frightened, she quickly formed a bond with Lammie, our resident companion sheep, which helped her feel more at home.
The team faced challenges feeding Khanyisa due to her mouth injuries, but they worked diligently to ensure she could drink properly. With the support of wildlife vet Dr. Peter Rogers, they provided round-the-clock care for three months until her wounds healed. Once she was ready, Khanyisa was gradually introduced to the herd, starting with Jabulani and then Lundi, who embraced her as an adoptive mom.
Since her rescue, Khanyisa has thrived. Her injuries have healed, and she has formed strong bonds with her fellow elephants. Now, she enjoys roaming the reserve during the day and returning to the homestead with the herd at night. Khanyisa’s name means “Light” or “Sunshine” in Shona, and she truly embodies that spirit, bringing joy to everyone around her!
