Summary

Heavy rains have destroyed the Catholic Church in Engii, a rural Maasai village in northern Tanzania. The village community are fundraising to re-build their church, but have insufficient funds to purchase enough building materials. For now, they continue to meet under a tree instead, but this is not possible during heavy rains. A small donation would go a long way for this village to be able to re-build their church: a cornerstone of local community.

Challenge

Northern Tanzania suffers from both severe droughts and intense rainy seasons. Such extremes of weather create significant challenges for the lives and livelihoods of rural off-grid villages. Heavy rains have recently destroyed the Catholic church in Engii sub-village. Without a church building, villagers pray and worship under a nearby tree, but are often unable to meet during bad weather. Villagers have been fundraising to re-build the church, but cannot afford the materials required.

Solution

This fundraising drive aims to support the village's fundraising efforts, to enable them to re-build their church. The price of some of the building materials required creates a barrier to the Maasai community from succeeding alone, and we hope to boost progress towards their goal. With the materials secured, the community in Engii will be able to re-build their church building and return to community worship once more.

Long-Term Impact

Through securing high-quality building materials, the Engii church can be built with increased resilience, to withstand heavy rains and extreme weather. Weather patterns in Tanzania will become more extreme with climate change, so this project can future-proof the building and ensure it remains strong and standing for years to come. This is more than a building: the church offers a space to bring villagers together, build community, and improve wellbeing.
