Help us restore vital electricity service to rural Haiti's small fishing town of Tiburon. The solar-powered grid was established in 2019 and delivered reliable electricity to over 2000 people for 4 years before suffering a fire. Fixing and replacing the equipment at the site of the fire and upgrading the batteries will get the power flowing again.
EarthSpark has been delivering some of Haiti's most reliable grid electricity in Haiti through its two town-sized solar-powered electricity grids. This, in spite of dramatic fuel shortages, insecurity and economic and political challenges in the country. Unfortunately, a fire erupted in one of the containers at the generation site, destroying the power electronics inside. These power electronics - the guts and brains of the system - need to be replaced to re-establish electricity service.
With its reliable solar energy and local operations team, EarthSpark's Tiburon grid has been able to deliver a measure of security, quality of life, and economic opportunity for the residents of Tiburon in spite of deteriorating in much of the rest of the country. Replacing the damaged equipment will enable EarthSpark to relaunch this critical service for the community.
Over 2000 people have had reliable grid electricity for nearly 4 years from the Tiburon grid. This kind of reliable grid electricity is, unfortunately, very rare in rural Haiti. Everyone is anxious for service to be restored. Fisherfolk will again be able to chill catches, businesses to resume operations, and people to enjoy power at home. EarthSpark is working to launch new grids in 4 additional towns in 2024, but all scale-up plans are on hold until the Tiburon grid can be re-established.
