Our project VIDEOBOOKS - to promote reading in Argentine Sign Language for deaf children - is growing not only in Argentina but also in the world. This year we were one of six international award winners of the WISE award and were invited to Qatar to receive it. The event was held within the agenda of the World Innovation Summit for Education. Thanks to this award our project was propagated in other countries: Italy, Colombia, Chile through newspaper articles and the television channel Al Jazeera and Euronews for the Arab region and Europe. With the support the WISE Award, in 2015 we will begin the expansion of the national videobooks project to the entire region. Our interest is not only to increase the amount of videobooks in Argentina, but also to expand into other Spanish-speaking countries and Brazil.
Although sign languages are different in each country, videobooks can be used in all Spanish-speaking countries just by changing the deaf reader. This way, the process speeds up greatly, and it also economizes resources which in turn favors the increase in the amount of videobooks.
We will start working with Uruguay since we have done some preliminary work with them.
To meet our goals, projects have broadened in several directions: the inclusion of a new page with stories narrated in sign language for deaf "Grandparents", the increase in the number of books and stories in Argentine Sign Language, and now the possibility to cross the borders of our country.
In addition, we began to work with a team in measuring the impact that videobooks is having on the deaf children and teachers. We want to know how they are being used, what age are the deaf children, if they understand the LSA, etc. The idea is to improve the site and also the books to increase the number of deaf children around the world that will have the opportunity to access literature through their natural language.
If this is also your wish, help us make it come true!
