Our project "Stories for deaf children in the hands of elderly deaf adults" reached its final stage: we have a new site in Internet in which the stories filmed and illustrated are shown in: http://cuentoslsa.org.ar/
The stories have also been recorded into a DVD and delivered to 100 schools that showed interest in having this material. This free of charge action was possible thanks to donors like YOU, and Andreani Foundation that gave as the free postage for schools far from Buenos Aires.
As all our materials, the stories have voice over in Spanish so that they can be enjoyed also by children and their families who do not know sign language.
This project received the First VivaLectura 2015 Award in the Digital category, which was awarded in the framework of the 41st International Book Fair of Buenos Aires. The award was established in order to stimulate, encourage and pay tribute to the most outstanding experiences in the promotion of reading. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Education's Office and the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), with the support of the cooperation of the Santillana Foundation.
This year we would like to organize a storytelling Festival 2016 in which deaf and hearing elderly people will be the storytellers for small deaf and hearing children. Our idea is to invite children from regular and deaf schools for them to be able to share stories told in Spanish and in Argentine Sign Language with the intervention of sign language interpreters.
We designed post cards for children and adults to “give away” a story, with the intention of spreading the Internet site and promoting books and reading.
It is an important goal of this project to encourage deaf children to meet elderly role models and to stimulate intergenerational encounter through the promotion of literature.
