A very special surprise for Children's Day

The group of elderly deaf adults that participated as the story tellers in www.cuentoslsa.org.ar decided to prepare a surprise for deaf children to spread the site and to encourage children to get close to books and stories.

This elderly deaf population who did not have the opportunity to get acquainted with children stories during their childhood, decided today to spread this children web site with stories in sign language to ensure that deaf children have the fortune they did not have.

This project goes beyond books and literature because it also intends to approach two generations, two languages and two cultures.

More than 90% of deaf children are born into hearing families who do not share a language with their children, depriving them of stories and rich conversations.

Canales is now working together with Navarro Viola Foundation and Casa Hogar (an Association of elderly women) to spread the web site. In this way, we are planning a Storytelling Festival that will be held in October for deaf and hearing children, and we are getting in touch with public and private institutions.

We recently created a video for Children’s Day in which many elderly women participated. In the video, this group of women is trying to think about possible gifts for the children. Each one of them thinks of something that relates to some part of a story included within the web site. But they are not happy with that idea because it is very hard to wrap up a goat, or to buy a crystal shoe.  The final idea is: let’s put all this presents within a bag and transform this bag into a web site with the stories. Children will then have all of those presents for Children’s Day. You can see the video here

The more we spread this web site, the more children will have the opportunity to enjoy a story in their natural language: Sign Language.

Enjoy them and share them! And please, help us propagate www.cuentoslsa.org.ar!,
