Humanitarian Rehabilitation in North Kivu

By Agizo | Project cordinator

Context
The North Kivu region in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing a severe humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing armed violence. After the city of Goma was taken by rebel forces, more than 42,600 people were displaced to Masisi and Nyiragongo. As some families begin to return to their communities, they are confronted with extremely harsh living conditions: destroyed infrastructure, closed schools, limited access to clean water, and widespread food insecurity.

Project Objective
The project aims to support the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of displaced populations to the Masisi and Nyiragongo territories. It is structured around three main components:

  1. Restoration of essential infrastructure (schools, health centers, local roads)
  2. Access to clean water through the installation of purification systems
  3. Food security via distribution of staple food items to the most vulnerable families

Methodology
In collaboration with local partners and humanitarian organizations, the project will include assessments to ensure that returns are conducted in safe conditions and uphold human dignity. The project will also involve community awareness efforts and support for social cohesion.

Long-Term Impact
This project aims to foster sustainable stability in the affected areas. By providing access to education, clean water, and food, it will help returning families recover from the immediate impacts of the crisis while promoting community resilience and reconciliation in the face of the trauma caused by displacement and violence.

Budget and Outlook
The total estimated budget for the project is USD 725,000. Currently, no funds have been secured. However, a partnership with the GlobalGiving platform is underway, and we are confident that we will reach our funding goal by the end of 2025.
