Recycling Plastic to Oil, Cobblestones, and Tree Planting

by Save life make difference

Summary

Our project seeks to generate positive environmental change in Burundi by reducing plastic pollution, promoting recycling, protecting ecosystems, and improving community livelihoods. Plastic waste has become a major environmental challenge in cities and communities located near rivers and the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Poor waste management, limited environmental education, and increasing pollution threaten biodiversity, public health, and climate stability.

This project will empower communities through environmental education, technical training, recycling initiatives, and reforestation activities. Plastic waste collected from communities will be transformed into oil and cobblestones, while tree planting campaigns will help restore the environment and fight climate change. The project will also create jobs for vulnerable people and reduce poverty through sustainable green activities.

Project Goal: $200,000

Raised: $125

Remaining: $199,875

Project Duration: 3 Years

Challenge

Plastic pollution is increasing rapidly in many cities and villages across Burundi, especially in areas bordering lakes and rivers. Large amounts of plastic waste are dumped into the environment because communities lack proper waste disposal systems, recycling infrastructure, and environmental awareness.

As waste accumulates, rivers carry plastic residues into Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa’s most important freshwater ecosystems. Pollution threatens fish, biodiversity, tourism activities, and the health of local populations. Deforestation caused by excessive firewood cutting also contributes to climate change, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity.

Communities affected by poverty often lack opportunities for sustainable income generation. Without environmental education and recycling solutions, pollution continues to grow and negatively affects future generations.

Solution

This project will establish a community-based recycling and environmental protection program that combines innovation, sustainability, and social empowerment.

The project activities will include:

Collecting plastic waste from communities, streets, riversides, and lake borders

Recycling plastic into oil that can be used as an alternative energy source

Producing cobblestones from recycled plastic for construction and road improvement

Training local recyclers and youth groups in waste management techniques

Organizing environmental education campaigns in schools and communities

Conducting environmental cleaning activities in polluted areas

Planting trees to restore ecosystems and reduce climate change impacts

Supporting local leaders and organizations to implement sustainable environmental actions

The production of alternative fuel from plastic waste will reduce dependence on firewood and help decrease deforestation.

Objectives

Reduce plastic pollution in communities surrounding rivers and Lake Tanganyika

Promote environmental education and sustainable waste management

Produce alternative energy from recycled plastic waste

Create employment opportunities for vulnerable youth and women

Produce durable cobblestones from recycled materials

Restore degraded ecosystems through tree planting and reforestation

Contribute to climate change mitigation and environmental protection

Expected Results

Thousands of kilograms of plastic waste removed from the environment

Increased community awareness about environmental conservation

Production of recycled oil and eco-friendly cobblestones

Reduction in uncontrolled waste dumping

Reduced tree cutting through alternative energy production

New green jobs created for local communities

Improved environmental conditions around rivers and Lake Tanganyika

Thousands of trees planted during the project period

Long-Term Impact

The project will contribute to long-term environmental sustainability and poverty reduction in Burundi through:

Reducing climate change caused by deforestation and pollution

Producing alternative energy sources from plastic recycling

Creating employment and income-generating opportunities

Improving environmental health and sanitation

Protecting biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems

Building a greener and cleaner future for communities

Beneficiaries

The project will directly benefit:

Vulnerable families

Youth and women groups

Local recyclers

Communities living near rivers and lakes

Schools and community organizations

Farmers and fishermen affected by pollution

Indirect beneficiaries will include the wider population through improved environmental conditions and climate resilience.
