The volcanic eruption and tsunami that hit Tonga have caused widespread damage throughout the country and caused ripples around the world. Communication lines with Tonga are improving and we continue to gain further understanding of the humanitarian impacts on the ground. Tonga Red Cross is visiting communities to uncover the full extent of the damage.
We know homes have been destroyed and water sources contaminated by the volcanic ash and seawater. Tongans will need support to rebuild their homes and communities, to stay safe from water-borne diseases like dengue, and the health risks posed by the plumes of volcanic ash that blanketed the country.
Australian Red Cross has sent water containers, mosquito nets, solar lanterns, tarps and shelter kits to bolster relief supplies already in the country. We are also providing our local partner Tonga Red Cross with technical support as well as support for their operating costs.
With your support, we have raised the funds needed to support Tonga Red Cross to continue their vital work in their local communities. They’ll work to help their local communities recover and rebuild. Thank you for the life-changing difference you have made.
