Community Resilience Through Care & Connection

By Azania Silva Gonzalez | Director of Investment in Social Transformation

At PECES, we continue learning that community resilience is not only built through plans and infrastructure, but also through human connection, compassion, and collective care. Through initiatives developed in Eastern Puerto Rico, we have witnessed how small acts of accompaniment and solidarity can profoundly transform the lives of older adults and their families.

In Punta Santiago, PECES has continued developing the initiative “Creating Smiles on the Faces of Our Older Adults,” a community-centered effort focused on the emotional well-being and active participation of the elderly population. Through support groups, home visits, recreational activities, and educational workshops, older adults have found spaces where they feel heard, valued, and connected to their community.

Activities such as painting, gardening, and arts and crafts workshops have become much more than recreational experiences. They have served as tools to strengthen emotional wellness, stimulate creativity, encourage social interaction, and help participants maintain cognitive and motor skills. Most importantly, these gatherings have created moments of joy, dignity, and belonging.

One of the most meaningful aspects of this initiative has been the intergenerational connections formed between youth and older adults. By sharing stories, experiences, and quality time together, these encounters have strengthened community bonds while fostering empathy, respect, and mutual learning across generations.

We have also witnessed the impact of community support through deeply personal stories. Recently, our Sustainability Center accompanied an older adult couple in Naguabo after a sudden health crisis drastically changed their daily lives. Following a severe injury and hospitalization, the husband became bedridden, while his wife postponed her own medical care in order to remain by his side throughout his recovery.

Through ongoing emotional support, transportation assistance, and home visits, our team has helped this participant reconnect with her own healthcare needs while also providing companionship and encouragement to both spouses during a difficult chapter in their lives. Beyond assistance itself, these visits reminded them that they are not alone.

Although initiatives like these may seem simple, their impact is deeply human. They remind us that resilient communities are built when people feel supported, accompanied, and valued at every stage of life.

While some of these efforts have been developed through broader community initiatives and partnerships, experiences like these strengthen our vision for the future and reinforce the importance of continuing to invest in community-centered programs. Support from donors like you through GlobalGiving helps us continue expanding spaces of hope, dignity, and care for vulnerable families and older adults across Puerto Rico.

Thank you for believing in the power of community and for continuing to walk alongside us in this journey of transformation.

 With gratitude,

PECES Team
