School Uniforms Promote Education for Students

By Chris Coats | Executive Director

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” —Nelson Mandela

One way to break the cycle of poverty, especially on a generational level, is to ensure that children have the opportunity to go to school. Without a solid education, vulnerable children struggle.

A World Bank report states: “Cambodia's educational landscape is changing. Primary education enrollment reached 90% in 2019, up from 81% in 2009. Yet the path to education is not free of obstacles. Financial burdens weigh heavily on families, often stopping children from continuing their secondary education. Targeted solutions are needed to lift these economic pressures and pave the way for learning.”

Ensuring children living in poverty are able to access education isn’t as simple as enrolling them in school. Although attending school in Cambodia is free, students are required to wear school uniforms and shoes, have backpacks, textbooks, and transport to and from school. Trailblazer helps with the transportation by providing bicycles.

School uniforms are worn in many countries around the world, in part by making any social differences less visible between the students. In rural Cambodia, where the majority of villagers are poor, uniforms serve other purposes. Uniforms address hygiene and give students something suitable to wear. However, many families are so poor they can’t afford several sets of uniforms for their children. Washing clothes on a regular basis is difficult because clothes are washed by hand, and there may not be a sufficient supply of water to meet all of the families demands. It is important to have one uniform to wear, while the second uniform is being washed.

Trailblazer works with the villages to address the needs related to students attending school. It is quite clear that one major obstacle students face in the educational system is having school uniforms. Uniforms ensure one of the barriers to children attending school and thriving in their studies is reduced.

In the first quarter of 2025, with the support of several donors, Trailblazer delivered 75 bicycles, 844 school uniforms, 4,200 toothbrushes, and administrative and student supplies to two schools.

With your support, you can help ensure the next generation of Cambodian students are empowered to learn and help address the problems within their own families, their communities and their country.
