CIRCULAR FASHION EDUCATION TOOLKIT

By Gwendoline Venn | Community Development Manager

CIRCULAR FASHION EDUCATION TOOLKIT OFFERS FUN AND FREE BILINGUAL RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN HONG KONG

Consumers now buy 60% more clothes than they did 15 years ago, but behind this increased appetite lies a tremendous trail of waste and pollution. Redress’ ECF toolkit works to change this by educating the next generation. Among the resources on offer is ‘Our Jeans and the Planet’, an interactive learning website that goes behind-the-scenes into the manufacturing of a wardrobe staple, a pair of jeans. From choosing the raw material to transportation methods, the virtual tour offers visitors the power of choice throughout the entire production process, sharing stakeholder opinions and stats about the environmental impact of each decision made along the way.

Students may also enjoy ‘Yoyo and the World’s Coolest T-shirt’, Hong Kong’s first educational comic book about sustainable fashion. The book follows school girl Yoyo and her brother Kevin’s adventures as they come up with ways to repurpose a favourite shirt so it does not get thrown out. Besides a physical book, the story is also available as an e-book and in read-along videos. Schools in Hong Kong are welcome to contact Redress to arrange a reading session.

Another resource designed for young learners is ‘Circular Fashion in Hong Kong’, a student-made educational video series exploring the current landscape of sustainable fashion in the city. The videos include compelling visuals, storytelling, statistics, and interviews to help students get a better understanding of the issues within the local context.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS, OUR 2021 IMPACT

If 2020 was the year that Covid shocked our world into a troubled standstill, 2021 was the year we all started adapting to a new world norm. Like others, Redress changed gears to bring our work into a hybrid world; mixing virtual and physical events and campaigns together in new formats whilst never diluting our resolve to reduce fashion’s negative impacts.

We’re proud to share our achievements across our programmes and projects in our 2021 Annual Impact Report

We’d like to send a huge heartfelt thank you to all of our stakeholders, partners, volunteers and donors, both locally and globally — we couldn’t have done this without your support.

BASED IN HONG KONG?

Our community clothes-sorting sessions have resumed, and we need your help! We are currently facing a 7-tonne backlog of unsorted clothing in our warehouse storage, waiting to be recirculated to our charity partners and other recycling channels. Visit Hands On Hong Kong to sign up for volunteering and help us tackle this pile-up!

Mark your calendar! Our Get Redressed Summer Pop-up is scheduled for 12–17 July. Come shop for trendy and affordable secondhand items with us! Details coming soon.

In light of the improving pandemic situation, The Redress Closet was re-opened on 7 May. Our opening hours remain from Wednesday to Sunday 12–3pm and 4–7pm. Come shop for the summer with our latest always-changing, curated selection of secondhand clothing and accessories for women and men!

Please consider donating to us monthly to help us support the ongoing growing financial challenges of collecting and redistributing clothing waste. Simply click the ‘donate monthly’ tab on our page here to set this up.

Best wishes,
