Tapping into designer creativity to tackle waste

By Hannah Lane | Development Director

Hello friends,

You may know that through our Takeback programme in Hong Kong, we distribute 60-75% of what we collect from the public to our local charity partners or resell to fund our own charity work. The remaining clothing is unwearable due to quality or damage and stains which gets downcycled or recycled with a small percentage landfilled.

Building on Redress’ goal to empower emerging fashion designers to create circular products, Redress recently started a new project supporting a selection of designers with residencies in Hong Kong to collaborate with Redress to showcase solutions for this problematic waste stream. So far two designers have joined the Redress team on various activities, including the mapping of clothing waste, design thinking workshops, and more.

The first project to emerge is that of Hong Kong designer Tiffany Pattinson who is currently showcasing her project ‘Shell scapes: Reforming waste’ at the Mondrian Hong Kong Corner Shop. In a captivating live process, Tiffany sorts, spins, and shapes fabric waste into pearls of artistry, culminating in stunning home goods like rugs and vases. This exhibition highlights the beauty found in what we often overlook, offering a deeper reflection on sustainability, waste, and the environment. Proceeds of the art pieces will come back to support the work of Redress.

Please consider donating again to our Hong Kong project, or bidding for one of Tiffany’s creations to support our work.

Next up: For those in Hong Kong, save the date, our November secondhand pop-up shop will be held from 11-17 November at Berkshire House. Follow us on Instagram @getredressed for more updates.

Thank you for your support!
