First Reef Check Survey of the Year
By Chen Sue Yee | Programme Manager
![]()
We just completed 10 Reef Check surveys at Pulau Sembilan and Pulau Pangkor recently, kick-started the 2023 Reef Check survey programmes in Malaysia!
The data that is collected is vital to track and monitor the health of coral reefs in Malaysia.
We are also delighted to announce that we have just released our 2022 Annual Survey Report. A total of 323 sites were surveyed and the reefs in Malaysia are considered in “Fair” condition with a level of living coral at 47.83%.
Key Findings of 2022 Reef Check Surveys:
- There is a slight increase of live coral cover from 44.26% in 2021 to 47.83% in 2022, and continues a trend noted in 2021 surveys, reversing a decline that started in 2015.
- Abundance of both fish and invertebrate indicators remains generally low suggesting either historical or on-going fishing pressure.
- Indicators of disturbance and pollution have increased in many reef areas.

Environmental Education and Awareness Programmes
By Chen Sue Yee | Programme Manager

We are very happy to announce that we are now able to resume environmental education and awareness programmes with schoolchildren on the island. From 2020 to 2022, the efforts had to be halted due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Since the start of this year, we had conducted 3 programmes with schoolchildren on Tioman Island – both primary and secondary schools. The programmes delivered were introduction to island flying fox which can be found on the island, importance of giant clam and recognising various types of fish that can be found at the marina. The schoolchildren were giving indoor classes as well as outdoor practical activities.
Environmental education and awareness promote children to become more engaged with their communities and surrounding environments. It helps them to understand why the environment is important and provides them with the building blocks they need to live eco-friendly and sustainable lives.

Glass Recycling by Dive Operator
By Chen Sue Yee | Programme Manager
![]()
It is very heart-warming to see business operator on the island taking the initiative to take care of the environment – their very source of income. Recently, a dive shop on Tioman Island, B&J Diving Centre, borrow our glass crushing machine to crush over 30 wheelbarrows of glass bottles that they have collected.
The machine takes in glass (bottles and etc), crushes them and they will come out into tiny pieces mimicking the sands. The ‘sands’ can then be used for construction and other purposes.
Everyone from the dive shop had worked hard in this recycling project. From cleaning the bottles, to peeling off labels, and on to packing them. Well-done to the team!
