Monsoon season has just ended on Tioman Island. With better water conditions, Reef Check Malaysia together with Department of Fisheries Malaysia and Tioman Marine Conservation Group headed out to Kador Bay to conduct beach clean-up.
During monsoon season, Tioman Archipelago received Northeasterly winds, the direction of the currents brought in loads of marine debris from South China Sea. Kador Bay is about 30-minutes speedboat ride from Tioman Island. The position of Kador Bay makes it the receiving end of marine debris brought in by the currents.
During the half-day clean up, we managed to remove around 300kg marine debris washed up ashore. The majority of the waste collected was from the fishing industry and the rest were plastic bottles.
