The economy of Mantanani Island depends solely on tourism. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the island’s economy is badly affected. Many resorts have cease operating due to lack of tourists, as a result Mantanani locals lost their source of income. To prevent the locals from heavily harvesting from the reefs for food, an economic recovery programme was introduced to them.
Abalone culture project was kicked start and Mantanani locals themselves manage the project:
- building and maintenance of abalone cage
- rearing and harvesting abalones
- marketing and selling abalones
The locals are now marketing and selling the abalones to mainland buyers. It is hope that when the Covid-19 pandemic has ended and tourism on Mantanani has recovered, the locals can market and sell the abalones to resorts, restaurants and homestays on the island.
