In an effort to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in municipal landfill, incinerator and burned openly by local communities, recycling programmes are actively carry out on Tioman and Mantanani Island. Landfill, incinerator and open burning emit greenhouse gases and contribute to climate impacts.
On Tioman Island, together with the local communities, we have set up 6 recycling collection centres, one on each village. Each centre is manage by a local villager. On Mantanani Island, there is one recycling collection centre to serve the small island. The centre on Mantanani Island is manage by our team together with the local community.
Recyclables such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, cans, metals and electrical wastes will be sent to these recycling centres. The recyclables will then be sent to recycling centre on mainland.
Some of the recyclables were upcycle on the island. On Tioman Island, glass bottles are crushed using glass crushing machine into fine sand to be used as construction materials. On Mantanani Island, HDPE and PP types of plastic are turn into fridge magnets handicrafts and single-use-plastic are turn into wallets and bracelets.
