Protect Coral Reefs in Malaysia

Reef Check Malaysia is still working on diversifying income for islanders on Mantanani to reduce reliance on coral reefs as a main source of income, hence reducing pressure on the fragile ecosystems. Recently a group of 15 Mantanani villagers were given handicraft training to increase existing locally made products such as fridge magnets, wallets, bracelets, and products made from virgin coconut oil (soap, lip balm and lip mask to name a few).

The latest training focus on cardboard plywood carving and t-shirt printing. The participants were given lesson on techniques to carve on cardboard plywood. The carved cardboard plywood can be sold on its own or used as stencil to produce painting on paper or t-shirts. The participants were also taught on techniques to fix colour on the painted t-shirt. It is hope with the training; the islanders will be able to increase their income.
