The spring season is a time of discovery and growth, and we are so proud of all of our Free Minds members who are uncovering their goals and achieving new heights in their careers and educational paths. This season, members graduated from college, completed job training programs, and continued on their lifelong learning pursuits by participating in our wide-selection of educational opportunities. We have listened to their profound and compassionate reflections in response to the literary arts, as they lean on each other to process complex emotions and shared experiences in our Reentry Book Club. It has been an honor to journey alongside them, and we want to invite you to join the journey and read about some of their most recent successes.
Discovering Freedom Through Books
Our Reentry Book Club, “The Build Up,” continues to keep growing with a record number of 160 attendees joining weekly. The Build Up is a safe space where members receive encouragement and support from each other, developing a circle of peer support where members uplift each other as they navigate the challenges of coming home. Recently, members have been reading Armed with Good Intentions, a memoir by Wallace "Wallo267" Peeples. In his book, Wallo267 traces his journey from growing up on the streets, to serving 20 years in prison, to coming home and becoming a successful entrepreneur and community advocate. During one of the book club sessions, members discussed the relationship they had with “freedom” while they were incarcerated versus the relationship they have with it now. Members further explored this subject by writing brief poems addressed to Freedom. Here is what some had to say:
“Dear Freedom, Thank you - Thank you for the experience of getting to know my family and enjoy the simple things in life: the sun, a bird, a drive.” - Ernest
“Dear Freedom, A lot come with you, but I ain't giving you back, I aint giving you up! I aint trading you in for anything!” - Sunny
“Dear Freedom, I always knew you were coming to get me. Thank you for knowing the right time when I had changed from a boy to a man. Thank you, Freedom.” - Edward
Members Complete Job Readiness and Personal Skill Building Apprenticeship
This February, 10 Free Minds members participated in our Job Readiness and Personal Skill Building Apprenticeship. They gained hands-on experience in computer literacy, professional writing, teamwork, and financial literacy. Participants went on a field trip to the Martin Luther King Jr. Library, where they were given a tour by library staff and Free Minds member Charles. During the visit, members learned about the wide variety of resources available through the library, and also applied for their library card. For many members, this was their first time ever having a library card. The apprentices also took part in an interview skills workshop and an inspiring vision board session, where they set personal goals for their future success. After the apprenticeship, members picked out professional clothing so they could be prepared for job interviews. With their new knowledge and wardrobe, members completed the apprenticeship with the preparation and confidence needed to join the workforce!
Celebrating Member Accomplishments
We are amazed at the resilience our members show in their job and educational pursuits! Here are just a few of the many accomplishments our members have achieved recently:
We are so proud of all of our members, who continue to demonstrate the highest levels of resilience and determination as they pursue their goals!
Member Spotlight: Jordan Graduates!
We first met Jordan when he joined our book club at age 17 when he was charged as an adult and incarcerated at the DC Jail. Our weekly group book club sessions at the jail helped Jordan open his mind to the power of books and poetry to help him see new possibilities for his future. When he was released he immediately joined our Reentry Book Club, where he was connected with a community of peers to support and encourage him. Jordan discussed his dreams of going to college, and we supported him through the college application process, and attended school visits with him. We shared in Jordan’s excitement when he was accepted into a BBA program in Business and Entrepreneurship. Despite the pandemic, Jordan persevered through his college years, remaining in constant contact with Free Minds. He continued giving back to his fellow peers by attending the weekly Build Up. During his studies, Jordan shared his desire to continue building on his professional development skills, and we soon trained him on how to facilitate so that he could lead small group discussions at the Build Up.
This Spring, we were elated to watch Jordan walk across the stage as he graduated with his Bachelor’s degree. We are so proud of Jordan and all that he has accomplished, and we know this is just the beginning for him. Jordan recently shared with us: “When I first joined Free Minds, I was going through a lot, and they were the ones who were always there. No matter how tough things were… they were always persistent in their efforts to reach out and extend their hands. And they are still the ones here for me today.”
Thank you for contributing to the success of our members, and for sharing in their accomplishments with us. We are so grateful for your support!
