Update from Community Bakery in Deheishe Camp!

Delicious Ma'amul, produced in the camp.
Delicious Ma'amul, produced in the camp.

Dear friends from Global Giving,

Thank you so much for being part of this initiative! Karama Organization is so excited we are together building this new social enterprise for Palestinian refugee women. The women from the camps have the skills, the recipes, the flavors, and we already have been able to secure and equipped most of the building. Now we need to work together on making this initiative a success!

We are now in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan, a month of fasting, worship, and reflection. Normally, restaurants and eating places are not very active this month. People are eating only after sunset, until the next dawn.

But one specialty that will be prepared and eaten in large quantities, is the traditional Eid biscuit: Ma’amul. A crunchy semolina biscuit stuffed with date-paste or walnuts. This year the women of the bakery will prepare this delicious cookie to be sold in the community when we will be celebrating the end of the month of Ramadan with Eid al Fitr. Look at the pictures to see some of the examples that we shared during a group iftar with the women participating in Karama’s Rooftop Greenhouses project. A fun and delicious evening we had!

Looking forward to update you soon with more activities.
