Community Building and Engagement with Santa Clara

I write this at a time of change for the organization as whole.

Sadly, four of our long-term volunteers are leaving or are about to leave.

Michael Beljaars has been with us for over one year. He helped the organization tremendously by focusing on our office and volunteer accommodation site, which included repairing roofs, rewiring, carpentry, and generally organizing the house and helping create a sense of community. Como si fuera poco, as they say in Spanish, (as if that was not enough), he also overhauled and maintained our IT system. He will be difficult to replace. He has written a great blog about his work with us here.

Around the same time, we also lost Anna and Antonia - two young German volunteers from Eco-Selva who worked with us for one year. You can read Antonia's account of her work with a local school in the community of Bena Jema here. Fortunately, we already now have another volunteer with us from Eco-Selva who will be continuing the work at the local school.

And finally, Thomas Younger, who was doing a remarkable job as Director of our Eco-social Justice program has to return to the UK earlier than planned because of a major family illness. He will be much missed.

Additionally, Brian Best, one of the co-founders of Alianza Arkana, has now gone to study a Masters in Indigenous language at the University of Arizona, in order to help create the first Shipibo/Spanish/English dictionary. You can read about his experience of the summer school before his Masters program here.

On the other hand, we have five new volunteers arriving in the next few months. (The area we really need help with is fundraising and communications. If you know of anyone who might be interested, ask them to write to: info@alianzaarkana.org.)

We recently heard the good news that we received funds from two different foundations - the New England Biolabs Foundation and the Schmitz Foundation - to support our work in the community of Santa Clara. This support, along with the money received from Global Giving, will help hugely to develop the permaculture project there - we plan to reforest more land with medicinal trees, build a hen-house and refurbish the old maloka in the community to attract eco-tourism. You can read more about the new developments in this project here.

Further important work that we did in the last three months was to run another five-day personal development program for teenage girls from the community of Paoyan. You can read more about this here.

As always, many thanks for your ongoing support.
