Dear Friends, PHASE Nepal's Independent Living Program (ILP) aims to support persons with disabilities (PWDs) and the elderly in remote areas of Nepal, particularly in Mugu. The program enhances their ability to walk, see, and listen, facilitating daily activities. Through this initiative, vulnerable individuals in deprived communities gain access to basic physiotherapy, primary healthcare services, and assistive devices. The program also focuses on training and resource provision, significantly improving the health and quality of life of both PWDs and their families. Advocacy and support are key components, ensuring that people with disabilities receive the physical help they need to lead fulfilling lives. Here we have two case studies to share with you.
Karma Jaishi (Name Changed), a 36-year-old resident of Soru-10, Dhaina, Mugu, participated in the Independent Living Program (ILP), where he received specially adjusted shoes and a cane that significantly improved his mobility. Grateful for the support from PHASE Nepal , Karma shared that he never imagined he could walk, work, or even visit Kathmandu. The program not only helped him travel safely to and from Kathmandu but also increased his awareness of the rights of individuals with disabilities. After interacting with others with more severe disabilities, Karma no longer feels limited by his own condition and is confident in his ability to contribute to his family and community. He has since started vegetable farming and expresses heartfelt appreciation to PHASE Nepal for the life-changing assistance.
He says, "The assistance I received has not only improved my mobility but also changed my outlook on life. I now believe in my ability to contribute to my family and community. The training and support from PHASE Nepal have empowered me to start vegetable farming and live independently."
Manakala Sarki (Name Changed), a resident of Soru-10, Dhainakot, Mugu, had never been to Kathmandu before participating in the Independent Living Program (ILP). The experience was transformative for her, as she visited prominent sites like Chandragiri, Pashupatinath, and the Kathmandu Zoo. Supported by PHASE Nepal, Manakala learned about the rights of people with disabilities and saw firsthand that despite her disability, she could lead an independent life. Interacting with others with more severe disabilities, she realized her own strengths and now confidently engages in vegetable farming and manages her daily tasks independently.
She says, "Before this program, I felt limited by my disability. The ILP opened my eyes to what is possible, showing me that I am capable of much more than I believed. I now confidently manage my household and contribute through vegetable farming."
The Independent Living Program has made a significant impact on the lives of PWDs in Mugu, Nepal, by providing essential resources and training. Participants like Karma Jaishi and Manakala Sarki have experienced profound changes, not only in their physical abilities but also in their outlook on life. These stories highlight the critical role of support and advocacy in empowering individuals to live independently and with dignity. The continued success of this program is essential for improving the quality of life for the most vulnerable in Nepal's remote communities, and we are deeply grateful to our donors for their generous support, which has made these life-changing transformations possible.
