We are thrilled to share with you a heartwarming update from the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) regarding our ongoing elephant rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Your steadfast support has played an instrumental role in enabling us to fulfill our goal of protecting and rehabilitating orphaned elephant calves in India.
We are delighted to inform you that a baby elephant, undergoing quarantine for the last four months, has been successfully introduced to the resident herd of elephant calves at the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC).
This journey began when the calf was discovered alone by the forest department in the Hawaipur village of Assam in November 2023. Initially, the team managed to reunite the calf with its herd in the wild on the day of its rescue. Regrettably, within a couple of days, the calf was again found solitary. Its herd had relocated, and the calf perhaps could not keep up.
The Forest Department eventually brought this weak and dehydrated baby to CWRC, where it was admitted for long-term care.
After undergoing a thorough quarantine period, during which the calf received essential care and attention, the time had finally come for integration with the resident herd. With cautious optimism, the team at CWRC orchestrated the introduction, hoping for a smooth transition.
The momentous occasion was met with jubilation as the resident herd accepted the newcomer. The gentle demeanor and welcoming gestures, particularly from Kunti, the eldest calf and leader of the group, deeply touched us, melting our hearts.
