The Iron Man in Pressure Garments: A Journey of Burn Rehabilitation

By Yi-Chun LIU | Social Worker, Taoyuan-Hsinchu Service Center

Four months ago, a catastrophic gas explosion at a factory changed 30-year-old A-Cheng’s life forever. With severe burns covering 70% of his body, the physical and emotional scars were profound. When asked about the accident today, he simply shrugs with a quiet strength: "It was just bad luck. I have to move forward."

The Grueling Road to Recovery

When A-Cheng first arrived at the Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation, the challenges were overwhelming. Intense itching from scarring, sleep deprivation, extreme physical weakness, and constant dizziness made even the simplest tasks feel like mountains. During burn rehabilitation sessions, basic movements often left him pale and lightheaded.

Yet, A-Cheng never backed down. His response to every grueling exercise suggested by our therapists was always the same: "I can do it," "I’ll try," or "Just give me a moment to breathe, then I’m back."

Every morning at 9:30 AM sharp, A-Cheng reports to our center. He meticulously dons his pressure garments and headgear—covering himself from head to toe despite the heat and discomfort. He pushes through muscle tremors and exhaustion, often telling his therapists, "Push me harder!"

Small Wins, Big Milestones

A critical part of burn rehabilitation is regaining independence. A month into his program, therapists encouraged A-Cheng to try bathing and putting on his pressure garments by himself. Just one week later, he beamed with pride: "I did it! I can shower and dress myself now!" That spark in his eyes wasn’t just about a task completed; it was the return of his dignity.

Facing the World with a Smile

Beyond the physical pain, the change in his appearance was a significant hurdle. However, A-Cheng has met this challenge with unexpected humor. He laughs about seeing his reflection while shaving: "I even put my photo as my phone wallpaper—there's no hiding from it!"

As for the stares of strangers? He takes it in stride. "At first, I cared. But once you go out enough, you realize it’s okay. Most people aren't actually staring."

Why He Fights

What keeps A-Cheng going? His motivation is simple and sincere: "It happened, so I face it. Looking back doesn't help. I want to get better so I can go out and enjoy great food with my girlfriend again!"

A-Cheng has transformed from a man who could barely stand to a warrior who demands more weight on his training rack. There are no miracles in recovery—only the steady, sweat-soaked accumulation of hard work.

You Can Be Part of the "Upgrade"

A-Cheng is "leveling up" his life every day, but he can't do it alone. The specialized burn rehabilitation and custom-fitted pressure garments he needs are only possible through the generosity of donors like you.

Help us support more survivors like A-Cheng. Your donation provides:

  • Professional physical and occupational therapy.

  • Provision of medical-grade pressure garments to manage scarring.

  • Psychological support to help survivors face the world with confidence.

Let’s help them rise, one step at a time!!!
