The Drought Emergency in Malawi project is a humanitarian response initiative launched to mitigate the severe impacts of the ongoing drought affecting large parts of Malawi specifically Chinseu community in Blantyre district. The project focuses on immediate relief and medium-term resilience-building for vulnerable communities.
Activities & Interventions
Delivered emergency food rations to 1200 households and set up 15 water distribution points in priority districts.
Distributed drought-resistant maize and legume seeds to 800 farmers, and repaired 5 community irrigation systems.
Conducted workshops on water conservation and climate-smart agriculture for 300 participants.
Challenges & Mitigation
- Transport delays due to poor road conditions; mitigated by using local distribution hubs.
Prioritized high-risk populations and optimized resource use through community partnerships.
Adapted interventions to include long-term resilience measures like soil conservation.
Outcomes & Impact
- Reduced acute food insecurity for 85% of targeted households
Increased crop yields by an estimated 30% in pilot farms using drought-resistant seeds.
Improved water access for 90% of communities served by new distribution points.
Future Plans
-Scale up irrigation infrastructure in additional districts.
Expand training programs to include livestock management.
