We started off the year with a bang: Instead of a Christmas party, this year we held a New Year's Party for the children at at the Upper Mellon Street, Upper Beccle Street and Upper Philip Street in the Wellington community. This party provided the children with a balanced meal - which they normally don't eat in their homes - due to the low income earned by their parents. The children were treated with dignity. Each child received a bottled drink - considered a special treat.

The party also gave the children the opportunity to socialize in an atmosphere of peace and friendship. The atmosphere was one of peace and respect for each other. This occasion gave each kid the opportunity to relate well with one another. The children were taught that no matter their religion or ethnicity, they are all one family. This was expressed additionally by sharing food and dancing together.

The party further helped the children demonstrate their social and academic talents through dancing, reading and giving short speeches. Boldness to demonstrate talent is a key to success. This program provided the platform for such demonstration.

Because of your support we were able to host this image-shaping party. What an investment in these precious children! Thank you for helping to make this party possible!

Events like these contribute to the shaping of the minds of these future leaders - helping them realize that they are special and valuable. We would not have been able to do this without your support!

Sleep is Now Sweet - The Priceless Gift of a Good Night's Rest

What's the value of a good night's sleep? It's priceless!

Sleep as we know is essential for productivity and growth. It recharges and renews us daily. Not getting enough sleep is no fun - and the sleep industry is an industry worth billions of dollars.

For many children in Africa, the lack of adequate sleep is a different story. It's simply a function of not having a comfortable bed to lie on. Not medication, temperature or firmness. Just no mattress. Period.

Foday and Daniel in Freetown were in this situation - previously sleeping on a mat - on the cold floor. Their parents could not afford to provide them with a mattress or a bed. Sleeping on the mat was no fun and most nights they did not sleep too well. This had an adverse effect on their schooling - as they would be tired at school - due to not having had a restful night. At school, they were not focusing or paying attention as they should. This is one of our concerns as we optimize the learning of children.

As this website states "Getting enough sleep is important for people of any age, but it's especially crucial for children if they are going to perform well in school".

Then YOU intervened. Through your donations we were able to provide a mattress. They were delighted to hear that we had provided a quality mattress for them - pictured. The sign that they hold reads - "Sleep is now sweet - thank you"

Through a new mattress - we have provided the priceless gift of sweet sleep. Simple by so very effective!

Together We Are Spreading Health, Safety and Educational Progress

Solar D-Light helps Edward study at night

How impactful are your donations! Do they really mean a lot to the beneficiaries? For Edward, the answer is "Yes, YOUR donations mean a lot". Here's some more about why this is so.

Edward attends the United Mission Community Primary School. He is in class six. He is preparing to take the National Primary School Examination. Edward was chosen as the worthy beneficiary of a Solar D.Light S 300 because he has been coming First place in class since he was in class two. He lives with his grandparent who cannot afford to buy a kerosene lantern for him to study his notes at night.   He is very hard working. When he grows he will like to be a lawyer. The parents are so grateful to you for considering their son worthy to receive the light you sent.

The light that we sent - see photo - is so much better than the local alternative - a kerosene lamp. Kerosene lamps only provide a little light - so you have to sit very close to them. Children study under the toxic fumes which cause headaches. Besides this, the poor lighting is a strain to the eyes and long term is detrimental to vision. Furthermore, fires resulting from accidents with these lanterns (fuel spillage, lamps leaking, falling etc.) have caused destruction and loss of life and property. The hazards of kerosene lanterns are further discussed in the linked articles.

Thanks to YOU, the hazards of studying with kerosene lanterns are no longer a concern for Edward. Through your gift, you have provided health, safety and educational progress. This is priceless!
