Dear friends of the Diani Children’s Village,
As we reflect on the first six months of the year it is evident that the generosity and support from all our donors and well-wishers have made life immeasurably better for all the babies and children in our care. Despite the economic hardships facing the community, we are able to provide the basic care for all the young ones in an environment that fosters mental and physical growth.
The Home continues to be the institution of choice when it comes to placing new cases abandoned babies and toddlers. This quarter has been relatively quiet with only one case referred to the Home. On the flip side, the adoptions and reunification of children with their families continues.
Adoption of baby Dorcus. Baby Dorcus was brought to the Home a day after she was born having been found abandoned on a rubbish heap. She is now 1 year and 3months old and has been adopted by a single mother whose wish has been to have a baby. The two, mother and child fit very well, and Dorcas took an instant liking to her new mother. We will continue with the after-adoption visits and monitoring to ensure that the journey into their new life is as smooth as possible.
It is often hard letting go of these children but the smiles on their faces afterwards, bring meaning to what we strive for.
Baby Rafael’s reunification with family. Baby Rafael is the newest member in our family. He was abandoned and rescued by passersby. In collaboration with the police, children’s department and our social worker, his family was identified. He recently reunited with his grandmother and is bonding well with his sibling. He is so happy to be home. We wish him a happy and fruitful life.
Update on the improvements. The walling project is nearing completion, and the new entry gate has been fabricated and has been delivered to the Home. It is awaiting the final coats of protective paint to be installed in its place. The 9-meter water tower is complete and supplying water with good pressure in the House and in the garden which is essential for the good operation for the irrigation system.
Vegetable shade Project. Every child deserves a right to a good and balanced diet. One of our supporters has partnered with us to set up a green-house project to ensure a constant food supply. With the steep increase in food prices, this initiative will help keep the running costs of the Home down. The skills that the Children will be taught should help them in the future.
On behalf of the Children and the Diani Children’s Village team, we would like to thank all those who are a part of this great family. Without you we could not have made it.
Diani Children's Village Team.
