The Tanzania elephant, once widespread with population of 300,000 elephants in various areas such as Ruaha and Tarangire National Parks across Tanzania's protected landscapes, is now facing serious threats and is listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. Tanzania is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, with an estimated 43,000 elephants remaining in the wild. However, illegal poaching for ivory, meat, skin, and other body parts continues to threaten their lives.
The growing demand for elephant ivory and other wildlife products, combined with weak law enforcement and limited anti-poaching resources, has fueled the illegal killing of elephants in Tanzania. Organized wildlife crime networks make it difficult to trace poachers and traffickers involved in the ivory trade. In many remote conservation areas, rangers operate under extremely difficult conditions and often lack modern equipment, while poachers continue to use advanced technology.
This campaign aims to strengthen intelligence gathering and wildlife protection efforts across Tanzania by creating a coordinated network to monitor elephant poaching and illegal ivory trade activities. Using surveillance systems, field intelligence, and modern tracking technology, conservation teams will identify and expose the individuals and criminal groups involved in the trafficking chain from poachers and transporters to traders and buyers. The project will also track smuggling routes.
Through this initiative, conservation organizations and local partners will build a clearer understanding of elephant poaching trends and ivory trafficking networks throughout Tanzania. Improved intelligence and stronger collaboration with law enforcement agencies are expected to increase arrests, disrupt illegal trade routes, and reduce elephant poaching significantly. In the long term, the campaign will contribute to the protection and recovery of Tanzania's elephant population.
