Rescuing Imperiled Wildlife in South Africa

Dear friends and donors of PNHF,

It is time to report again on the work that Phalaborwa Natural Heritage Foundation (PNHF) has done over the past couple of months. These are some of the successes we achieved since our last progres report in April 2023;

1. We've conducted 32 anti-poaching Operations.
2. Patrolled over 219km on foot.
3. Removed 699 illegally set poacher's snares and 1 gin trap.
4. Discovered 10 poaching camps.
5. Arrested 1 suspected poacher and gathered intelligence that lead to the arrest of multiple poachers.
6. Discovered 75 animals illegally killed in snares and poisoned by poachers, these include 17 cape buffalo, 2 giraffe, 1 hippopotamus, 9 zebra, 9 impala, 3 wildbeest, 2 waterbuck, 1 spotted hyena and 22 poisoned vultures.
7. Taken 281 local community members and international volunteers out on anti-poaching operations.
8. Successfully rescued 2 large animals. We darted a Spotted Hyena and removed a cable snare from around its neck, it was treated and released again. We darted a young male lion that escaped a reserve and was seen walking next to a very busy road, the animal was moved back into the reserve.
9. Assisited with the testing of two buffalo bulls for Bovine Tuberculosis.
10. We assisted in the collaring of an African Wild Dog together with the Endangered Wildlife Trust.
11. We did two environmental educational presentations to two Dutch school groups that visited our area, there were over 40 children and close to 10 teachers in the groups.

The above mentioned data and statistics gathered during the past four months has contributed to the conservation of our local biodoversity in the nature reserves, parks, tribal game reserves and neighbouring communities where we conducted operations. In some areas we have noticed a decline in snaring even zero snaring in certain properties, this is a big win for us and shows that our efforts are successful.
