Reforesting the Mayan Highlands

Wellkind Guatemala – Progress Report

Thanks to the generous support from GlobalGiving, Wellkind Guatemala has made significant strides in our reforestation and environmental restoration efforts in the Lake Atitlan region. Over the past several months, we have planted over 3,000 native trees in our nursery, which will be distributed to local farmers and communities in the coming planting season. These trees are essential to restoring biodiversity, preventing soil erosion, and ensuring sustainable access to resources for indigenous communities.

In addition to our tree planting efforts, we have successfully established 3 fully functioning food forests for local families in the community of Tzununa, Santa Cruz L.L. These families have received hands-on workshops and guidance from our team, along with all the necessary materials to create productive food forests on their land. These food forests not only provide year-round access to fruits and vegetables, but they also serve as a model for sustainable agricultural practices that can be replicated by others in the region.

As we prepare for the 2025 planting season, we are focusing on restocking our nursery with a diverse selection of native tree species. Our goal is to make this planting season the most impactful yet, with a focus on increasing the variety of species we plant and ensuring that each reforestation effort provides long-term ecological and economic benefits for local communities.

Each tree planted, each food forest established, and each workshop held brings us closer to our goal of restoring the natural environment of the Lake Atitlan watershed and empowering local families to protect their land and resources for generations to come. We are excited to continue our work and look forward to the positive impact this project will have on both the local people and the environment.

Thank you for being part of this important journey!
