Updates from Reforestation in Lake Atitlan

By Kyle Weinstein | Program Director

Thanks to the continued support from GlobalGiving, Wellkind Guatemala has been able to make meaningful progress in our ongoing reforestation and conservation efforts around Lake Atitlán. Since our last update, we have established one additional food forest, bringing our total to four fully functioning food forests that are providing healthy, year-round food for local families. These projects not only address food security but also serve as living examples of sustainable land stewardship.

Our native tree nursery continues to grow, with over 1,000 new seedlings now being cultivated for the upcoming planting season. These native trees are carefully selected for their ecological and cultural importance, and will soon be distributed to partner communities for reforestation efforts that protect water sources, restore degraded lands, and build climate resilience.

As we move into the 2025 planting season, our team is preparing to expand operations into new areas, including Chichicastenango in Quiché and Nahualá in Sololá. These regions face increasing environmental threats from deforestation and erosion, and we are eager to collaborate with local farmers and leaders to bring regenerative practices to their communities.

Our team is busy on the ground — planting, training, and organizing with the goal of scaling up our impact while staying rooted in local knowledge and priorities. We are deeply grateful for your support, which allows us to keep growing this important work.

Thank you for being a part of this journey to protect and restore Guatemala’s vital ecosystems!
