By Samson Namwoyo | Project Leader

Summary

Retention of orphan girl children project in budaka and Kibuku distract Eastern Uganda aims at empowering 49 widows in commercial vegetable growing to improve their family’s nutrition and income to pay school meals and scholastic materials for 1200 school going orphan girl children between 12-18years. The 49 widows is being empowered with modern knowledge and skills in vegetable growing and provided vegetable seeds, pesticides and spry pumps as a state up for the project. This is the January – April report and it is located on Globalgiving website and our website www.kagumudevelopment.org . The report clearly comprises of the progress of the project for the quarter ended March, 2016 with financial support from all stakeholders.

Current status

The following was done in the last quarter:

  1. Enrolled more three(4) widows to benefit from the project and they were given hands on farm training in vegetable growing
  2. Supervised and monitored 24 widows projects to ensure that they follow the recommended vegetable agronomic practices
  3. NO       widow harvested because it was a drought season
  4. Currently they are preparing their gardens ready for plantation
  5. Currently orphan are in schools and first term 2016 is ending 30th April, 2016

Challenges

  1. The organization is faced with limited funding to support widows to undergo commercial vegetables production in order to maximize production and sustain the buyers demand
  2. Some widows lack land and therefore, the organization hire land for them and they practice collective production.
  3. Only one out of 32 supported orphan girl children were defiled hence got pregnant therefore fore there is need to mainstream child protection activities in our project.

Recommendation
we submit our request to all development partners to extend their giving hand to the project to facilitate the implementation of this project in order to improve the social- economic empower of widow led households as this is the only viable project in terms of providing quick returns.

Testimony from the beneficiary

This is testimony from Edith the wife of late Bwire of Bulangira Sub County in Kibuku district who died and left Edith with five orphan girl children. late bwire died of HIV/AIDS after selling all the land he hard and the time he died there was no land left for the widow and the orphans. Bwire had not made a will and during the clan meeting to identify the hair members felt sad when they identified the widows had nothing for a living apart from the traditional house they were living in. the community felt concerned and requested our organization to give support. The organization accepted to take responsibility and enrolled Edith to benefit from this project. She is among the target beneficiary of this project, she was trained and provided with vegetable seeds and inputs to start vegetable growing project this April-june season. .

She promises to work hard and secure capital to educate her girl children who will procure land to compensate the sold land of their Father. she vow to implicate whoever, will defile her daughters.

This is a true story and explains how our project works in respect to support of orphan girl children in Uganda.
