Return vulnerable children from Kibera to School

Schools are open. The bells are ringing again. Classrooms are filling with the sound of children learning, laughing and settling into the last school term of the year.

But for some children in Kibera, the same bells are silent.

Returning to school is not as easy as putting on the uniform and walking through the school gate; financial hardships and the cost of basic school necessities are some of the things that a lot of families in Kibera struggle to afford.

We work around the clock to give these children another chance to return to the classroom, regardless of age and where they left off. Take Jane, a Grade 6 learner who is one of our success stories. She joined the school in 2025 under the Transition Programme. Upon admission, she faced significant literacy challenges. She was unable to identify all letter sounds or read words independently, which greatly affected her confidence and participation in class.

After identifying these learning gaps, her teachers developed targeted interventions focused on sound recognition and foundational reading skills. Jane also benefited from the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) programme, which provides literacy and numeracy instruction tailored to each learner's ability level.

Through consistent support and individualised instruction, Jane made remarkable progress. She can now recognise all letter sounds and confidently read two-letter words and some three-letter words. This improvement has strengthened her confidence and better prepared her for the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA). Her journey demonstrates the effectiveness of personalised learning interventions in helping learners build essential literacy skills.
