Three great volunteers are with us at La Reserva, Kelsey Standingdeer, Jessica Munson and Joey Owle. They have planted about 1000 trees this past week, replacing seedlings that didn’t survive in projects that have been planted within the last two years. Yesterday we went to the Maleku Reserve in Guatuso to take an inventory of all the participating landowners nurseries.
It was a long day, super hot sun beating down upon us as we walked the unshaded fields to each nursery. Next week we will plan how we will distribute the seedlings and we will pay the landowners for their trees. Monday, May 30th we begin the planting of the Rio Sol Biological Corridor at Franklin Mojica’s farm. He is reforesting 4 hectares of pasture and has 4000+ trees in his well ordered and maintained nursery.
Some of the other landowners have have been unable to make nurseries due to illness or work responsibilities. For these properties we will use trees from all of the other nurseries to plant a wide variety of native species.
So far there is no lack of help for the project. Ten people are beginning on the 30th to plant the Mojica property. Others are already seeing how this integral project works and want to plant a small nursery to help supplement the quantity and types of trees available for reforestation.
The Rio Sol Biological Corridor project was the “Project of the Month” for April at Global Giving. These donations will be used to plant this first stage of the corredor’s 35,000 trees. We have 12,000 to plant starting on the 30th.
YEAH, LET’S GET PLANTING!
