More than 500,000 Rohingya people have fled their homes in western Myanmar since August. With next to nothing, the vast majority of these refugees have crossed the border into southeast Bangladesh seeking asylum and safety.
The United Nations has described the Rohingya refugee crisis along the border of Myanmar and Bangladesh as the “world’s fastest developing refugee emergency.” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, U.N.’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, called the situation “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” Daniel Sullivan, a human rights advocate at Refugees International warned Congress it has potential to become the next Rwandan genocide.
Thanks to your support, GlobalGiving’s partners are on the ground working tirelessly in and around the expansive refugee camps along the border of Bangladesh and Myanmar. Two weeks ago, we sent funds to support the critical work of Hope Foundation, an organization meeting the massive medical needs of Rohingya refugees as they arrive to crowded bamboo and tarp camps.
Hope Foundation is serving Rohingya patients with its network of field health clinics stationed throughout the camps and other informal settlements. They are providing immediate care, life-saving surgeries to pregnant women, intensive newborn care, and are in the process of constructing field hospitals to reach more remote populations of refugees.
As our partners push forward with their immediate relief efforts, we'll continue to keep you updated on the progress being made and the impact of your donation in the months to come.
