Who wants a taste of Palestine?

Karama present at the Bazaar!
Karama present at the Bazaar!

This month, Karama kicked off its production of traditional food products by the hands of our refugee women, who are all participating in Karama's Rooftop Greenhouse project! (The project YOU donated to!) A nice selection of products is now for sale locally. The market was entered through a local event, organized in the newly opened UNRWA clinic.

Karama is now the proud producer of tasteful traditional food products, like different types of jam (strawberry, orange, raisins), pickles, zaatar, date paste and dried yogurt in olive oil. All these products are made by the women active in Karama’s project, under the supervision of the project’s engineer. Raw materials are sourced from local farmers, and soon the greenhouse production can also be used. Through this initiative, refugee women will become social entrepreneurs developing a fabulous end-product with both market and social values!

Let’s take a moment to send a big thanks to our Karama staff, all project participants and the local UNRWA office who participated with us in the local Bazaar!

During one of the Bazaar days, the UNRWA organized a workshop on a serious reoccurring problem in the camp namely the use of tear gas by the Israeli army when they storm the camp (day and night). The lecture covered the impact of the gas on children and elderly among other things and equipped all who attended with relevant information on how to deal with this issue. It also confirmed the illegality of this use of this type of gas in densely populated areas especially close to the schools or family homes. It is clear the occupation army is not following any international treaty or human rights convention with regard to this issue and tramps the needs and rights of our children and women.

Some of the seniors attending this event were the head of the UNRWA in Deheishe camp, head of UNRWA in the Southern West Bank and the director of operations in Palestine, namely Scott Anderson. They all spoke much appreciation for the work Karama has accomplished in the past year, and we were so happy to show him some of the fruits of our hands. I believe the Strawberry jam was favored by most of them!

Something else that was showcased during the Bazaar were the handicraft and knitted products from the women, who have been active in the last 2 months with knitting lessons. Many of them started fresh in this area and were able to already develop a beautiful selection of wool and cotton products. It is lovely to see the results of their hands, but also see the women pleased with being active in a useful way; creating beautiful items that will be happily used by the lucky buyer.

Remember, Karama products are now available for selling locally and who knows soon in a store near you! ;)
