Quality maternity and infant healthcare can be hard to find in Haiti with government facilities critically under resourced and private facilities varying widely in the services they offer. But our partner hospital has many returning patients as we provide excellent affordable healthcare even for complex and high risk conditions.
Jean had her first two children by caesarean at our hospital and knew she wanted to come back when she was expecting her third. She received pre-natal care at the hospital where it decided that considering her birth history, she should have an elective C-section at 35 weeks.
When the time came, the baby was born with severe breathing difficulties, and was rushed straight to the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU). The baby was put on oxygen, various medications and phototherapy. It’s been 9 days since the birth and Jean is delighted both her and her baby are doing well thanks to the Nurses and Doctors.
The staff at the hospital have the knowledge and equipment to care for babies suffering in this way and in this case there is a happy ending. But what happens when 2, 3, 4 or more babies all needs this care at the same time? Equipment is limited meaning not all stories end so well. Our vision is to ensure every baby admitted gets the best care available so we’re fundraising to extend and re-equip the NICU.
