Our goal this year is to drill wells for 20 farmers. Additionally, if funds are available, we will drill one additional well for a kindergarten program that is located in one of our villages. Nearly all of the well recipients in our program are women and many of those women are widows.
In March, during Mark’s visit to Cambodia, Mark met with all of the candidates to receive wells, at a local Buddhist temple. All the well candidates were selected by our local partner who reviews various aspects including need, initiative, farming results and others.
Meet Ms. U. Y, of our well recipients
Ms U. Y is 41 and she has been a widow for nearly 18 years. She has three children – one son and two daughters -aged 17 to 20 years. All three of her children work in Phnom Penh. Her son works as utility company lineman. One daughter works in a garment factory and the other is a porter in one of the city’s markets. The photo shows Ms. U.Y ( wearing pink) standing in front of her home.
Besides her home, Ms. U.Y. has a rice field measuring 0.5 hectare (approximately 1.25 acres) and her homestead land (including her house, yard and garden) measure just 700 square meters.
A well will give Ms. U.Y the opportunity plant a garden and diversify from a single annual rice crop that is dependent upon rain.
Our program aims to help people like Ms. U.Y. achieve financial stability and decrease dependence upon a single rice crop. This possible only because of the generosity of you, our donors.
