Livestock's change the life of coastal people
Livestock's change the life of coastal people

Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) has been trying to improve the life standard of to the Sundarbans coastal people (Banishanta union of Dacope sub district of Khulna district). BEDS has supported 20 Sheep, 100 chicken and 100 ducks to this coastal people. The supported people are now very happy with those livestock. It turns out to be a great means of alternative livelihood for them.

Impact:

Livestock have changed our life. Our monthly income has increased. Now I am earning money from home. I don’t need to risk my life to go to Sundarbans for harvesting resources. I can take care of my children’s education expenses in a better way than what I did in past.

Feedbacks from the beneficiaries:

One of beneficiary expresses her felling. Before starting the alternative livelihood work, I used to harvest resource from Sundarbans. I was collect fishes, shrimp and crab from Sundarbans and I think it is too difficult job and also risky. Sometimes my income was very low. On the other hand Bangladesh government has issued strict laws on forest resource harvesting. BEDS has provided 20 ducks and 3 ram to me. After that I am nourishing those rams and ducks. New ducklings have been born and sheep are giving birth to new lambs. Now I can earn from eggs and meat selling. Now I don’t have to go to Sundarbans for resource harvesting.

I expect that the scope of our work will be expanded. This initiative encourages other villages to engage in livestock rearing. There are many more marginal villagers live in the coastal region, who deserve same support. BEDS is currently trying to raise fund from GlobalGiving platform in order to help those marginal people.
