BEDS supported 100 ducks to improve the economic situation of Sundarbans coastal people during Covid-19. The villagers who had given the support, are taking care of the livestock on daily basis. As the duck needs less care and management, poor women can easily rear the duck. It needs less space for rearing, and requires low inputs of feed, housing facilities, and management. Ducks can easily adapt to different climates and they are also relatively resistant to diseases. So, coastal women can easily get benefit from duck farming by selling eggs and ducks as a source of meat.
The Coastal people of Sundarban’s depend on Sundarbans fully for their livelihood and income. Their lives are full of poverty and uncertainty. So, they use natural resources to survive for livelihood. Sundarbans is the only destination where they can go for their subsistence. Throughout the year they go to the Sundarbans to collect honey, catch fish and crabs, collect leaves, and others. The People who depend on the Sundarbans resource harvesting fall at huge risk as the Bangladesh government has issued strict laws on forest resource harvesting. Also, for unplanned resource harvesting; the natural resources have degraded at a high rate. Those people have maintained their life under the breadline. In our country, the pandemic situation is going on advancement day by day but still, people have no capability enough to start their daily income-generating activities. Livestock can be a great source for them to raise their income as well as for fulfilling their nutritional requirement also.
BEDS is currently trying to raise funds to help those marginal people in the way of income generation for their better future with better economic conditions. We also hope that through taking support from various corners they will be able to use their products for earning their sound livelihood.
