Most of the people of Sundarbans coastal region depends on the forest resources for their life and livelihoods. Lack of proper skill to produce, process and packaging most of them don’t know how to get maximum benefits from the minimum resources.
BEDS has established BANOJIBI at Dacope where coastal communities have the modern facilities to produce several non-wood mangrove based products like mangrove pickle, mangrove honey, mangrove molasses and several handicraft with fallen mangrove leaves. Coastal communities are preparing, processing, packaging and marketing of their developed products. A small-scale business has been established which is leaded by the coastal women. Thus, the community women have become empowered and contributing in their family income.
One of the women expressed her feelings, “Before, I used to work as a day labour on the water melon farm for 2 months in a year. There are 5 members in my family including my mother-in-law, husband and two children. After the establishment of BANOJIBI, I took training from here and started preparing and packaging mangrove pickle. Now I can operate modern machines for pickle packaging. Now I can contribute to family for my children’s education’’
