Bangladesh, being an agriculture-based country, has extensive farmlands where large shade trees are generally avoided to protect crop productivity. As a result, open agricultural fields and grazing areas remain highly exposed to lightning strikes, especially during sudden thunderstorms and seasonal rainfall. Every year, many farmers and rural residents lose their lives due to lightning-related incidents. To address this challenge, the project titled “Safe Life From The Thunderstorms With Plants” has been initiated through an environmentally sustainable approach. The project promotes planting tall and slender trees such as palm, betel nut, and palmyra trees, which naturally function as lightning conductors without affecting agricultural productivity or land usability.
As part of this initiative, 25 palm trees have been planted in Khanpur, Gorgori, Bagha, Rajshahi as a pilot demonstration to improve community safety and disaster resilience.
The project is being implemented mainly in Lalpur Upazila of Natore District and Bagha Upazila of Rajshahi District. In continuation of this initiative, the organization is submitting the 7th Quarterly Progress Report highlighting project progress and community engagement activities. Global Community Organization remains committed to building safer and more resilient rural communities in Bangladesh.
