Monica, Safe Spaces basketball Star Forward, has earned a scholarship to attend university. This covers only the tuition fees. Who will help fund her Room & Board and costs of living?
Monica’s background
Monica joined Safe Spaces in 2014, at the age of 17, when she moved from her parent’s rural home to her brother in Nairobi in order to seek support for school fees. As the 8th of 15 children, she could not rely on her indigent parents to support her academic ambitions. While attending secondary school, she focused on achieving high marks and was successful. She is the only girl in her family who has gone this far with education. Most of her female sibling’s succumbed to early pregnancies and marriages. They are struggling with their lives at the moment.
Monica became a proud member of the Safe Spaces Basketball team, turning out to be our Star Forward and top rebounder. Her score averaged 15 points per game. She was also very active in the Safe Spaces program as a peer educator. She trained to become a peer educator and taught dance and poetry to the younger girls.
Higher education is Monica’s next step. To finance this ambition, Monica applied for various scholarships. She was awarded a Sport and Science scholarship from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, located in Kakamega, Kenya, some 420 km northeast of Nairobi. She started in September 2017 to study for a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (4 years). While pursuing her studies, she also plays for the University Basketball team.
Monica is very ambitious and committed to make her higher education a success, following in Peninah’s footsteps, the founder of Safe Spaces.
Our Request
We are extremely proud of Monica who independently earned and organized her tuition fees, for the full 4 years of her study. She already demonstrated ambition, focus, initiative and determination, qualities fostered by our Safe Spaces programs. For her to continue and complete the study, we are looking for sponsors for all other costs. Masinde Muliro University is too far from Nairobi for Monica to commute. She needs to live nearby campus and has no family in the area.
She needs financial support to cover the costs of Room & Board, Medical Insurance, Transportation to and from school during holiday periods (4 times a year), and pocket money for books, clothes and personal hygiene items. Any financial donations she will receive will help her achieve her academic and professional ambitions and enable her to build a better life for herself and her family.
